AbR Conference opens challenging to Expand the Vision

Over 100 people from 18 African countries and 8 other nations gathered in Limuru, Kenya to interact with one another on the subject of Expanding the Vision.
The session was opened by the Chairperson welcoming all the delegates and explaining the theme. Lee Sonius introduced the ethos behind ‘Africa by Radio’ and what it does in empowering media in Africa. The most interactive session followed and that was tea time, as during this time most friendships are built and networks established. The buzz kept going until the competition to win a Nexus 7 tablet computer was announced by Distancemedia.    Prof Levi  Obonyo highlighted how media is influencing the society and how all of us are submerged in media day and night all the time. “The younger generation hears with their eyes and see with their ears” was the message from Sam Kputu of CAPRO  Mission. Lunch was great and had people eating as well as buzzing with ideas, networking and building relationships.   Breakout sessions followed where the delegates could choose one of three workshops. One was on ‘Social Media’ where drinks were distributed and one person was drenched totally. What was that about? Practically sharing socially – one to all and one to one and some work in groups.    In one of the afternoon breakout sessions the focus was on distance learning or online learning. About 25 people attended the sessions and had a number of questions about the new citizen media training and how the online training works.   There is another session after dinner and you will read about that in tomorrow’s report. It has been a good day with lots of interaction and partnership building. Well that’s the whole idea of this conference. So keep watching the space for other exciting news and views.
