| AbR’s FIRST CONTINENTAL CONVENTION A GREAT SUCCES |
|

Africa’s first-ever meeting
of Christian broadcasters and media practitioners from across the content,
has been heralded a great success by delegates. More than a hundred
participants and day visitors, representing many countries, organisations
and individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa and abroad, gathered in Johannesburg
from 17th to 19th September, to learn, interact
and celebrate how God is using media to transform communities and society.
In his inaugural address, Africa
by Radio chairman, Jan-Erik Nyman described the gathering as historic,
reminding delegates that the tool of radio was a key which could influence
individuals, communities and churches to bring an end to some of the
continent’s “giants”, like Poverty and unemployment, HIV and AIDS,
sexism, tribalism, violence, families in crisis, crime and corruption.
Many of these giants were
brought into sharp focus during a powerful
exposition on worldviews by Hein van Wyk, of Every Home for Christ,
who said that despite Africa’s countless blessings and riches, it
remained undeniably the most poverty-stricken and broken continent on
the planet. He said the root of Africa’s problems lay inside
the minds of its peoples and that their worldview needed to be replaced
by a Biblical worldview.
As well as workshops on a range
of topics from internet radio and new media, to training and orality,
there was also time to celebrate at a gala evening at which Bradley
Kirsten from One Africa won the coveted Africa by Radio award
for his radio programme “What’s your next move?”. You can

ABR AWARDS
Excitement and tension filled the air as the delegates to the first ever Africa by Radio (AbR) Continental Convention gathered on Friday evening. The gathering not only celebrated a successful convention but also the quality productions that were submitted for the first ever AbR award. Africa by Radio invited Christian Radio producers, stations and production houses to compete for great prizes, and the honour of winning the Africa by radio Award for best African Christian radio production of the year. Nine (9) programs were submitted to the judges prior to the convention. With a comprehensive set of guidelines, the judges narrowed the field to three (3) before selecting the winner.
